Common in the wilds of Australia, the Tawny frogmouth is an owl that is found in many different areas such as river beds and hot desert interiors. Although they can become as tall as 21 inches, this Tawny frogmouth measures around 12 inches and is closer to the smaller side of their range, which is around 8 inches.
The photographer was lucky to catch this nocturnal owl near the end of daylight hours while it still roosts motionless on a perch. This Tawny frogmouth began vocalizing with a repeated "oom" sound just after the photo was taken.
The Tawny frogmouth is primarily insectivorous. The twilight hour, when a multitude of bugs come out, is near. The rapid flying owl will quickly swoop down on its prey, and it will use the powerful bill, seen in this photograph, to swoop up insects or to devour small mammals or birds before swallowing its prey.
