The Red-legged Seriema is found in open woodland, grassland and other open areas from central and eastern Brazil through eastern Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay into central Argentina. The bird has a raised crest, pink legs, a red bill, a greyish-white maxilla and stunning blue eyes. The bird will feed on grain, but it prefers to be a diurnal hunter in semi-open drier landscapes south of the Amazon basin. It hopes to feed on beetles, grasshoppers, lizards, snakes and rodents. Its fast paced run allows it to escape its predators. It flies much less frequently, and it is rather clumsy in flight.
This bird is highly vocal. His loud yelping cries sound like they are coming from a young dog. The photograph was taken just before sunset, and this Red-legged Seriema was just resting after letting out several loud yelps.
