The Great Egret is a type of Heron and lives in marine habitats in southern Florida and Cuba. Its diet consists of fish, aquatic invertebrates, frogs, and small mammals. The female breeds in colonies and situates her nests up to 40 m above ground within trees. She lays 1 -7 eggs. The Great White Heron is approximately 40 -50 inches in length.
In the winter months the Great Egrets display fabulous breeding plumes that made them a target during the early 1900s for poachers seeking the plumes for use in various fashions of the time. This practice greatly reduced their numbers.
