As the late afternoon Caribbean sun is about to set, a member of a flamingo flock is preening his feathers. These birds have a wingspan of 55 inches. They can weigh as much as six pounds, and they can reach five feet tall. These Caribbean flamingos are found in coastal salt lagoons or saltwater or brackish shallows. They acquire their pinkish-orange color as a result of the brine shrimp that is a major part of their diet. The photographer has found flamingos in North Cacos in the Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean and also near the salt mines on Bonnaire in the ABC Island chain belonging to the Netherlands Antilles.
