Every Terraform is made by Chris Yates
exclusively. Once a location is designated, a
paper template is created for the piece by tracing
regular intervals of contour from a topographic
map. The template is then sized to the piece and
each contour line, or "level," is traced individually
onto fiberboard, a dense material of reconstituted
sawdust and glue. After each layer is traced, it is
then cut out roughly, first with a jigsaw and scroll
saw.

Small bandsaws and very fine
blades are used for the final cuts,
allowing for the intricate detail of
each level. Once the final cuts
have been made and every piece
is sanded, the layers are ready to
be painted. A graduated color
scheme is selected, based on
hues found in the actual landscape
of the location, and is airbrushed
onto each piece. All Terraforms
are also treated with an acrylic UV
coat to prevent any fading. When
the paint is dry, the layers are
glued into place like a vertical
jigsaw puzzle. Final touches such
as pins, legends, hangers, and
stands are customizable,
according to your specifications.
The Terraform is now finished and
ready for display.
