tree frogs - Frog Sounds.

Frog Calls -- Pictures and frog calls of frogs as they call from the pond

In the Northeast, a walk to a local pond in springtime can reveal many frogs.  As you
approach, you can hear their frog calls.  You might hear a Carpenter Frog or a Bull Frog.
As evening approaches, you will surely hear the Northern Spring Peepers.

If you approach too rapidly, the frog calls will stop.  You may hear a high pitched peep and
a splash, but you won't see a frog.  Approach stealthily, and you might be rewarded with a
view of a Green Frog, Bull Frog or Leopard Frog.  Examine the sides of the pond near the
reeds.  A pair of frog eyes might be staring back at you.  More information and links on
these frogs can be found by scrolling down this page.

Caribbean frogs have much more melodious, relaxing calls.  A sample of a continuous
recording, that we sell to help fund these web pages with a portion of the profits donated
to the Virgin Islands National Park, can be heard below.  A free screen saver of the
Caribbean is included with the purchase of this CD.

Additional information on:

Bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana): length is 3 1/2" to 8"; The bullfrog is the largest frog that you will spot in
New Jersey.  A key distinction between the bullfrog and the green frog, which are commonly mistaken
for bullfrogs, is that the bullfrog has no dorsolateral ridges.  In its place, a ridge will be found from the
eye past the eardrum dropping down to the shoulder.  The tympanum or eardrum of the male bullfrog
is larger than its eye, but the female's tympanum is the same size or smaller than its eye.  We find
bullfrogs among the vegetation at the edge of the pond between April and July.  If a bullfrog is
present, you won't miss the loud bellowing frog call.  For more information on Bullfrog Calls, visit this
educational web site.

Carpenter Frogs: (Rana virgatipes): length 1 5/8" to 2 5/8"; Four yellowish stripes running lengthwise
on a brownish colored general body color make the carpenter frog easily identifiable.  Carpenter frogs
have no dorsolateral ridges.  Carpenter frog calls sound exactly like a carpenter at work.

Green Frogs: (Rana clamitans melanota): length 2 1/8" to 4"; Dorsolateral ridges distinguish the green
frog from the bullfrog.  We find the green frog from April to August in permanent bodies of fresh
water.  When you approach the pond to rapidly, it is a green frog call that you hear when you hear a
high pitched peep from some creature fleeing for deeper water.  For more information on Green Frog
Calls, visit this
educational web site.

Northern Spring Peepers:  (Pseudacris crucifer crucifer): length 3/4" to 1 3/8"; The spring peeper
breeds from early March through May.  You will know when Spring is on the way if you open your
windows at night, and you can hear the wonderful sounds.  They sing in a chorus going, peep, peep,
peep.  This is especially true after a heavy rainfall.  The male spring peepers are searching for a mate.

Wood Frog (Rana sylvatica): length 1 3/8" x 3 1/4"; The wood frog is found in wooded areas that are
dark and moist.  They breed in vernal pools.  The key identifying mark of this frog is a thin dark line
that runs from the eye past the tympanum.  Dorsolateral ridges are present.
